Bus--Rome to Siena & Siena to Milano

The preponderance of opinion here is that the bus is the better mode of transport from Rome to Siena and would be from Tiburtina Station. Are the buses relatively large with one's luggage stored underneath as in a US domestic Greyound, or stored topside "in" or above our seats, and if the former, is the luggage relatively safe from thievery (I wonder about intermediate stops)? We did hold our luggage on our laps on a 2004 trip from Elgin, Scotland down to Aberlour but that was just a pleasant half-hour ride and some form of Brigadoon-like English was spoken on the bus. Is the bus from Siena a similar adventure (i.e., from Rome to Siena)? It seems as if there would be at least one intermediate stop.

I took a bus from Siena to Florence and the luggage was stored in compartments under the carriage. I imagine it would be the same for the bus from Rome to Siena, which is a longer bus ride.

Here is a dissenting opinion. I hate being on any bus for more than a hour, so 3 hours on a bus is, for me out of the question. So several Italy trips ago, when I decided to take a vacation from my vacation by leaving Rome for 2 nights, I took a train to Siena, my first trip into Tuscany. I bought the ticket the day before, changed trains in Chiusi and at the Siena train station I hopped on the shuttle for the five minute ride up to Siena center. All of the above was a seamless no brainer. Who knows, maybe it all was just dumb luck. I never will forget that train ride from Chiusi to Siena: the slow train chugging among rolling golden fields dotted with cypress, the windows wide open (this was in an August). If the bus were a little faster, I would not care. So there you have it. A vote for the train.
