I’m trying to book a bus ride from Siena to Rome for my husband and me on 22 April. Unlike the train reservations, the bus websites require that I provide passport numbers for each of us (or drivers’ license numbers.) This makes me very uncomfortable, especially when the trains did not require the same. Is this the norm? I’m tempted to wait until I get there to buy tickets, but am afraid they won’t be available. (I could take a train instead—but trains take an hour longer). Any thoughts or feedback on this? (I should add: I also need to get to Siena from Florence by bus on 20 April, and expect I’ll encounter the same issue.)
Which company is that? I would take Flixbus if that makes you uncomfortable.
They don't ask for passport number.

As far as I know, there is nothing about your passport number that can lead to identity theft. In Italy, you will be required to show your passport and maybe leave it at the reception desk at each lodging check-in. There is nothing about this that should make you uncomfortable.
Passport number has little meaning or use, so I would give it. Far safer than a credit card number.
Thanks all for your responses to this post. (I ended up reserving on trains.)
