Bus or Train from Milan to Verona

Hey! I am flying into Milan and out of Florence. (My trip will be 12 full days.) Im planning on going to Verona before heading to Florence. Should I take the train or bus? Also how many days should I plan in Verona?

We took the train. Be warned that the regional trains are not always air conditioned on this route. We were there in August and it was beastly. It was during covid so had to wear a mask which made it worse. My son and girlfriend came on a later train the same day and theirs was not air conditioned either.

The fast trains (more expensive) are.

We spent three nights in Verona, taking a day trip to Lake Garda one day. Three nights would be perfect I think if you don't take day trips. We would have liked another day.

Thanks for the info! I am actually going in December, so I don't think I will have to worry about the heat. haha! I am however worried about how cold it will be. :(

Train

Stations
Milano Centrale
Verona Porto Nuova

It’s a bit of a walk from station to Verona center
We took a cab - about 10 euros

We enjoyed 3 nights in Verona, that seemed just right for us-did not take day trips but there are quite a few nearby/easy ones
It’s a lovely city

I took a train, and then a bus from the station to the center—had to walk a bit through the pedestrianized center to get to my accommodation.

I only spent one night, arriving in the mid-morning and leaving the next day, in the mid-afternoon. That felt like a just adequate minimum, but another night would have been better.

I’m traveling in Italy now. The train service has been smooth, efficient and comfortable. Milan to Verona by train is roughly a quick 1 hr and 15 minutes. That should be relaxing compared to a bus. Plan on boarding no later than 15 minutes before departure in order to secure a comfortable seat in a not so crowded car. Milan Centrale is a breeze to navigate.

Thanks everyone! This is all great info. I'll gladly take more tips if you have them. I'll be traveling solo, so the more tips the better.
I'll be in Italy for 12 days over Christmas.

Hello bridgetzicarelli,

The fast train from Milan to Verona is an easy ~1:15 and there is no reason to do take else. Prices rise as the day approaches so you can trade some savings for time flexibility by booked your fast train tickets early. The same is true for Verona to Florence BTW.
Get the Trenitalia app to check schedules, buy tickets and track trains.

The Verona train station is a bit outside the old town so bus or taxi into the more interesting parts of the city. A taxi to anywhere in or near old town is ~10e barring traffic jams. The old town is tight for buses so they tend to run around the edges of the old town.

Verona is a lovely and genteel city with much shopping, wonderful buildings, cafes and two great piazzas - Bra and Erbe - connected by pedestrian only streets. I haven't been to Verona during Xmas - we just got back from 10 days in October - but I'd be shocked if they didn't turn out some great Xmas markets given the tenor of the city. Depending on your interests I would do at least 2 nights in the city to get a full day to experience it at a relaxed pace.

Most big cities have a Christmas market/village going on Florence has one in Piazza Santa Croce as well as other celebrations.

Arezzo (~1 hour from Florence by train) is famous for their Christmas decorations lighting up the main piazza and displays around town. (People reported last year the light displays was much lower key but that was during the uncertainty about power at the start of the Ukraine conflict.)

I haven't done Xmas in Italy but I have in France and it does add a special feeling to what's going on around you.
Have a great trip!
