Bus or train connection from Civitavecchia, Italy to Fiumicino Airport

I am looking for anyone who has travelled from Fiumicino Airport in Rome to the port in Civitavecchia either by train or bus. What is the best connection?

I am assuming you are hooking up with a cruise ship. Both Civit and the airport are on the same side of Rome -- somewhat to the SW. We always come in a couple of days earlier so we have not gone directly from the airport to Civit.

One route would be the Leonard Express (Train) into Termini and then the train to Civit. Train into Rome is two an hour and about 30 minutes. For Civit about three an hour and will take from 45 min to 1:15 depending on the train. It is basically a commuter run. The Civ train station is about a mile walk along the beach to the port entrance. From there shuttles buses will take you to your ship. There is a shuttle bus (1.10Euro) from the station to the port entrance. Taxi are available IF they want to drive a mile. We always walk because the bus is always full and we don't want to wait. You should be able to see your ship from the train station. The train fare will run from 8 to 12 E depending on class and seat reservations. Total time from when your plane lands - three hours or less.

To other quick points -- if using this route, buy all your tickets at the station in the airport. The tracks to Civit are in the very far right hand corner (facing the tracks with your back to the front of the station). A long walk - two or three blocks inside the station. Second, if returning to Rome after the cruise buy round tickets in the airport. When cruise ships dock the line to buy tickets to Rome is impossible. Finally -- be sure to understand how to validate your ticket. Like punching in at a time clock in yellow boxes near the tracks. The fine is very heavy if you do not.

Many thanks for the detailed message. It is a great help knowing that someone else has been through it.

I actually have done that trip but the other way around. My cruise ended at Civ. port and we took the train into Rome. We walked along with many others to the train station and it was do-able. Since it was a commuter train, it was packed. So grab a seat and hunker down. Have a great time!
