Bus or car tours of Amalfi Coast

Unfortunately I get motion sickness on winding roads. On a tour of Tuscany a few years ago the winding roads got to me almost immediately perhaps in part because the driver was going a little fast. We are planning a trip this August to Italy and want to include the Amalfi Coast but I am a bit nervous because from what I read those roads are winding as well and would hate to be sick again. Do all or most tours of that area include many winding roads?

Rick Steve's just posted a tour that he has been working on for a long time. Very reliable and well checked out by his company. If you go on his blog he linked it for you. You may have to just take something for motion sickness if you really wanted to see this beautiful area.

I sympathize with you because I have motion sickness on boats and in the car if I am not driving. Unfortunately, you cannot avoid winding roads on the Amalfi coast although they are not the worst winding roads I have ever been on. There is really one main road that goes between the towns. I did a car tour so we could stop if necessary and I could control the temperature better. I used Amalfi Coast Destination Private Tours and was very happy with them.

Have you ever tried a scopolamine patch? I wear one on vacation when I know there is going to be a long drive or I will be on a boat. The biggest side effect for me is dry mouth but it is tolerable and definitely preferable to feeling nauseous. They are prescription and you should discuss with your doctor to make sure they are a safe option for you.

My sympathies as well as I have stomach just like yours. I was so sick just on a private shuttle between Naples and Sorrento (early flight or would have taken the train) that I don't know how I would have managed on the buses or back seat of a car around the coast. I'd advise packing some anti-nausea meds if you really want to do this tour.

I took the bus ride down the coast, the one that Rick always shows. It was beautiful, but I was so sick, it was so winding. I couldn't ask the bus driver to stop, we were full. I would definitely take a car, take your time, and take something for motion sickness.

I'd second (or third or fourth) the car...I'm not overly prone to motion sickness (more on ferries/boats than in a car)...but someone on our public bus from the Coast to Sorrento really was, judging from the retching noises! With a bus, you may not get to sit right beside a window and I find you 'feel' the bumps and curves of the road more than in a car...we used Sorrento Silver Star car tours for a private 8 hr tour on the coast last year. Had a nice Mercedes mini van and a great driver.

Hmmmm ... maybe you'd better off watching the Rick Steves video at home and then enjoying a day in Sorrento. As noted above, there's only one narrow winding road.
