We plan to take an early morning bus on a Thursday in June from San Gimignano to Poggibonsi, where we then plan to catch the train to Pisa. The problem is I can't find the name of the bus line and/or a bus schedule. I would like to purchase the train tickets to depart Poggibonsi at 8:45 a.m. and need to make sure we can get a bus to there by then, or our train tickets will be useless! A MINI fare is available for the train, so I'd like to purchase the train tickets online ahead of time. Or any other suggestions would be great! Thanks!

Website for the bus schedule is www.trainspa.it/train04/extraurbano.pdf. Scroll down to bus #130/R. Buses should be on the summer schedule in June, so there's a bus departing San Gimignano (piazza by main gate) at 7:39 and arriving Poggibonsi train station at 8:00.
Lana, I'm looking at the trains schedule from Poggobonsi to Pisa on a typical Thursday. All trains for the entire day (30 runs) are all on Regionale trains the entire way. All runs require a train change at Empoli. There are no mini-fares on the Regionale trains and, they cannot be purchase online any farther out than 7 days from your time of travel. Don't worry about missing your train. Simply buy a ticket for your day of travel from a train station before you get to San Gimignano. Your ticket on a Regionale train is good for 60 days. There will not be specific train or departure date and time on the ticket. You can ride on any Regionale train making that run within the 60 days. Just show up with your ticket, validate it in the little yellow box and get on. If no seats, you can stand. It's like a bus on tracks. Could you please identify what you are looking at that is offering a mini-fare. I'm curious. Here's a link to what I see. http://gyazo.com/1e7e0136f931033b8da30d4ffea51371
Thank you so much for the replies! Frank, I never would have found that bus schedule!!! Or been able to figure it out :) Do the buses/trains run on time in Italy? Sounds like the bus arriving at 8:00 in Poggibonsi would be perfect, and we should have plenty of time to catch the train that leaves at 8:46. Do you happen to know if the bus station in Poggibonsi is close to the train station? Larry, sorry I meant the MINI fare is for the train we connect with in Pisa, that goes from Pisa to Levanto. So I want to snag that price! We'll leave SanG in the morning on the bus, take the train from Poggibonsi to Pisa, spend 3 hours in Pisa and do Rick's walking tour to get a picture of the leaning tower, get back to the train station and catch the 13:00 train with the MINI fare to Levanto and spend 3 days in the Cinque Terre. Thanks again! Any other suggestions are appreciated!!!

Lana, you're doing fine on the scheduling. It look like you are looking for the 12:52 from Pisa to Levanto with a train change at La Spezia Centrale. Regular fare is 12:30E for both trains. There is a mini-fare of 7E for the Intercity from Pisa to La Spezia Centrale giving you an overall fare of 10.30Euro. This is an overall savings of 2Euro. What this does, is lock you into a specific train and departure time for two trains. If you miss the train, your tickets are toast. For 2Euro, it's not really worth it to lock yourself in. I would suggest relaxing on your walk, take nice pictures of the tower including the one where you stand over by the church with the tower in the background and stand about 20 feet in front of the camera, position your hand to make it appear that your hand is supporting the tower, then take the picutre. You'll see others doing it. Then, perhaps you have nice lunch then head for the train station. You can buy tickets then for the next train to Levanto. The 13.44 train doesn't require a train change at La Spezia. The 3:00 depature does require a train change but you get to ride the very nice Freccibianca high-speed to La Spezia. Cost you more though. Overall fare is 17.70E.
My experience is that the San Gimignano buses run on or very close to schedule. The schedule shows a stop at Poggibonsi FS, which is the train station.
Frank--Thank you, it is good to know the bus goes to the train station--is that maybe what FS stands for? :) All I know is ciao (spelling?). Larry--Thanks for the insight. I hadn't even considered what the actual savings would be with the MINI ticket, and now that you point that out is seems quite obvious that that plan would make for the best day. Thanks for the photo suggestion too. Just got a new camera last week and I am super excited to take some awesome pictures!! Thanks,
Lana
FS = Ferrovie dello Stato, which is the official name of the national railway. When you see it as part of the name of a bus stop, it's a stop for a train station. And you did spell ciao correctly. Enjoy your trip!
Thanks Frank, I'm hopeful that knowledge will eliminate some travel errors on our part! Now I know 2 expressions in Italian!
