Bus from Florence to Siena

Sorry, I just want to sanity check our plan for getting from Florence to Siena and back by bus. It sounds like we don't need a ticket ahead of time. The morning of, we'll just go to the bus station in Florence (near SMN train station), buy a ticket from the station, and then board the bus. Once in Siena, we'll buy a return ticket from the station (same day). Is that it?

I will use the schedules listed on tiemmespa.it to know when the 131R R and 131R A (rapide buses) are scheduled to depart. How early do we need to be at the bus station? 30 minutes? What do "Sa" and "L" mean on the bus schedules?

It'll be on a Friday in early March, so not the Sunday schedule. Thanks!

Yes you can buy tickets at the station the same day or the day before, whenever. I'm pretty sure they don't fill, unless you go when the Palio race is on.
30 minutes? Are you kidding? Some people show up seconds before departure.
L=Lavorativi (Working days M-F) - Saturday excluded
Sa=Saturday only
If there is no indicator (L or Sa) it means Mon-Sat.
Sundays are Festivi (holidays), so you need to look at the Festivi timetable if you go on Sunday. You shouldn't take the bus on weekends however, Mon-Fri have more frequent bus service.

You can also just buy the return ticket in Florence. Saves time.

We did that. We also walked to bus station the day before just to scope it out. It is well organized, but lines can be long depending on time of day.

Agree with rizelli. Go the day before to ensure you get the departure and return times you want. You can buy both at the same time. Also you will know how to find the station. Even with Rick's directions it's a bit tricky to find.
