Do I need to purchase these tickets before I leave for my trip or is it easy to get a ticket that day?

When I was on the RS Sicily tour last year a couple was doing this after the tour ended and the guide didn't seem worried, just told them to go to the bus station and buy them. So anecdotal evidence there isn't a problem (assuming your travel isn't on a big day like Easter)
