Any suggestions on which is easier to maneuver at approximately 1600 with weary travelers (2 ladies) and bags? Never taken a boat there; how do we navigate/negotiate that idea? Are boats negotiated prices or "set"? Thanks!

You don't mention what date or month you are traveling so it's difficult to give you exact information. There is bus service between La Spezia and Portovenere. I ed 15:00 on Sat., April 16. Your train from Rome will arrive at La Spezia Centrale. The nearest bus stop is at Mercato Nord, about an 8 minute walk from the RR station. Buses leave every half hour at :27 and :57 and arrive at the end of the line in Portovenere at :00 and :30. It's about a one minute walk to the Piazetta in the middle of the town. I'm sorry, I was going to say we will be leaving Rome approx noon and traveling to Portovenere. we plan to take the train to La Spezia. I think it arrives around 3:45 or so. I don't have the Trenitalia schedule right in front of me and haven't made reservations yet but will soon. we can leave anytime from La Spezia after that. Our date of arrivel in rome is June 25.

If you are staying in Portovenere, you might to take a taxi from the La Spezia Centrale train station. You might inquire at your hotel on the best way to get to the hotel from the train station.
