Just a heads up. Visited the island of Burano last week. Was very excited to see the lace. I found a pretty cardigan that was just what I was looking for. The woman assured me it was made there. When I got home, i noticed a tag that said, Made in Cina (I assume that to be China). What a disappointment. The ladies there were friendly but very pushy. Be forewarned!
If you look at the tags, very much is made in PRC (people's republic of china) but they are made from Italian materials. It's the same here in the States.
When we were there, any lace that was actually handmade in Italy was very, very expensive. For less expensive things, the salespersons in the shops would answer the "where was it made" question with "they were highland-made" without being more specific as to the country.
That's a great way to put it: "highland made!!"
I'm sorry this happened toy, but it's been common knowledge for decades that there is little lace produced in Burano anymore. This was written in 2011 but the situation has persisted since much earlier:

A shopkeeper in Venice on the subject of lace: <<<<<<< estimated that 98% of the lace, and 60% of the glass, for sale in Venetian shops is made in China. He carries Chinese machine-made lace in his own shop because sometimes that's what people want, but he keeps it sequestered in a windowless, almost closet-like space all its own far from the main showroom, and does not pretend it's something it is not. At first, he said, the quality of such lace wasn't too bad for being machine made, but it has gotten worse. However for those who want to buy a lace tablecloth in Venice, such lace is often the only type they can afford. Though he does carry some smaller tablecloths and table settings partially hand-made in Tuscany that are quite reasonable.>>>>
And "made in Tuscany" often means "made in the sweatshops of Prato," owned by Chinese and employing Chinese workers (think of all that fake designer stuff sold on the streets in cities all over the world.....lots of it comes from Prato.

And check those "Murano glass" trinkets---many of the inexpensive Murano--figurines, beads, etc, ice also made "in the highlands."

not surprised anymore, agree with what robert says.
about 8+ years ago, loved burano and roaming thru all the shops stopping at the lace shop. i was surprised at cost but understood the work it takes. i bought a pretty shaped brooch since i wore them at work and great memory. little taken back at 140E but i bought it and still have it. kinda curious how much was the cardigan?
anyone traveling anywhere be very careful and look at tags where it was made. thanks for the heads up.

Last trip, I noticed that many items said "designed in Italy".....not made.
The thing that really bothered me was she assured me it was made there. A flat out lie. This was not an inexpensive piece.
