I'm working on building out an itinerary for a week in Umbria and I'm looking for suggestions on scenic towns, villages, drives, etc. We're going in mid May and we will have wheels. What are your favorite towns and drives (beyond Orvieto and Assisi) and why? Go!
I have wanted to go to Gubbio for a long time, but it hasn't happened yet. It has a medieval center and the photos look very atmospheric. Wikipedia say's there's a fiesta on May 15.
I also have 3 suggestions that are actually in Lazio, but none is more than 15 miles from the southern border of Umbria as the crow flies, so keep these in mind if you're down in that area.
Tuscania is an old hill town not too far from Viterbo. It's not dead like Civita di Bagnoregio, but it was extremely quiet the day I was there (though I may have arrived during the siesta period). It seems to be off the tourist track.
Viterbo itself is a real city, a walled city. It feel real, sort of in the same way Bologna does but without all the students. Not many tourists around but an interesting historic district. Not, you understand, a tiny little charming place, and you'd need to check ahead of time on where you might ditch the car.
Tarquinia has Etruscan tombs, but I've never been there. It's very near the coast.
We will be there in early May and I am researching this as well. Second trip, staying in Siena. Planning on Orvieto already. Would love to hear about your favorites too.
So many; Umbria is my favorite region.
Gubbio also has a Roman arena about a kilometer outside of town.
Near Assisi are Spello and Trevi, lovely little towns.
I loved Montefalco and Todi as well.
My music festival is in Assisi for 3 weeks every year. After way over a decade the city still inspires me, relaxes me, rejuvenates me. Night time, when the tourists are mostly gone, is not to be missed! Spello and Gubbio are also delightful places to wander through. From Perugia to Orvieto can be very interesting if you're willing to get off the main road and cross the river.
We spent several days in Perugia as a base for the area, mainly because of the good transportation options. We did not have a car and did day trips. In addition to Assisi and very medieval Gubbio, we visited Spoleto. Roman theater, lovely center, Lippi frescoes in the Cathedral, and the viaduct and fortress. When we were there (gosh, 2008?!) we could walk across the viaduct...I was surprised one could, maybe still can? That was cool. A great day in a fascinating region. It was In Spoleto that we were scoping out two side by side restaurants for lunch, and had had just decided on Restaurant A when we saw the waiter from A go pick up his carry out from B. We chose B too. Safe travels.
Spello, Trevi, Gubbio, Orvieto, Bevegna, Montefalco and Todi are on the itinerary along with Assisi (staying in Spello). Any great scenic drives that we should know about? Any other off the beaten path towns that we need to visit?
Also we're not huge fans of bigger or even midsized cities (its more of a been there, done that thing over many trips to Italy). That being said are Perugia and Spoleto that unique and/or beautiful that they merit a trip (we've done Siena, Pisa, Florence, Verona, etc)
We have used the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide: Backroads for Northern and Central Italy to discover many wonderful scenic roads and towns. We bought a used copy from Amazon, but many libraries also have copies to bottow.
