Budget Hotels in Milan

Because we were able to get free tickets with our miles, we are flying in and out of Milan but not spending any time there. We'll be arriving in mid afternoon and taking the train to Venice the next day. I think we'd like to find a cheap hotel/ b&b near the train station. Any recommendations? Just need something clean with a shower and a decent bed so we can rest up after the long flight and be off the next morning. Coming back, we will be taking the train from Florence and spending the night in Milan before flying out early the next morning. This time, we'd like to stay near the airport.
Any recommendations ???

Well, since no one has answered yet, I'll try to be of help. In Rick's books he mentions the website to check the convention (Fiera singular, Fiere plural) schedule. It's something like 'www.fieremilano.it.' for a comprehensive list of all expos and such in the city. If something rather big is going on, cheap is not an option. But if no shows are happening, prices are, as Rick puts it, 'very soft.' It seems your days are already set. If there is something going on, book a room a.s.a.p. Have you tried EuroCheapo? If nothing is scheduled, wait till the last moment and use Priceline to bid on the plethora of 4-star convention hotels.
$100 for the anonymous, ice-machine-down-the-hall, comfort of a Marriott or Hyatt in not unheard of.

Price is part of the concern but location is also important. I don't want to be across town and have to get to the train station or the airport.

I'm not sure the Berna Hotel's prices would suit you, however it is very near ( a block away) the Central train station and reasonably priced for the quality of the stay. Their prices vary, so go online. That area is less expensive than the Duomo area. In the same 2 or 3 block area as the Berna are a few other RS recommended hotels. Good luck.

We have flown in & out of Milan Linate the last few years, staying in Milan close to the train station one night coming and going. We have stayed at Hotel Florida http://www.hotelfloridamilan.com/en_chisiamo.asp for these overnight stays in one of their superior double rooms. We paid 140 euro last October due to trade fairs that weekend and 105 euro last month for the same type of room. Glad to be just half a block from the train station because of a taxi strike last month. The metro station is very close if you want to go to the Duomo area.

Rooms on my upcoming trip were found on Booking.com, Venere.com and AirBnB.com. I also use TripAdvisor.com for information on rooms. They can be filtered according to location. You have to sometimes be careful on rooms around train stations. Sometimes they're in seedy locations. _________________________________________
I prefer outgoing flights from 10:30 to 12:00. I don't cherish trying to find a way to the airport @ 4:00 a.m. for a 6:30 flight. Things also seem to work better later in the morning--including airplane maintenance, ground transportation and public transit.

Why not just stay at the Holiday Inn Express at the Airport. It's $93 a night and has a free breakfast.

The Holiday Inn makes sense. It can't be too hard getting to the train station the next morning to get to Venice and we will be exhausted after all the connecting flights from Seattle to Milan. It'd be nice to just plop next to the airport for the first night.
