Looking for a well priced hotel or pensione near center of Venice for 1 or 2 nights. Was there many years ago but need some updated recommendations. Thanks
Ai Tagliapietra B&B is a great place at 100 Euro per night and you have a private bath. We were there in May and it is an easy 5 min walk to St Mark's and a 10 min walk to the Rialto Bridge. You will have to have the owner guide you to it on arrival because it really is on a back street.
Not sure what the center of Venice is. However, we liked hotel Tivoli. It's very close to Frari Church at the border of San Polo/dorsoduro. You can walk there from Piazzale Roma/Santa Lucia train station or get off at San Toma boat stop. It's about halfway between Rialto bridge and San Marco.
We've stayed at Al Campaniel B&B for all 3 trips to Venice.

We've stayed in the standard double, which had a separate but private locked bathroom across the hall. We've stayed mid-Sept generally and paid about 70-80 euro. Just seconds from the San Toma vaporetto stop. Lovely breakfast, and a fancy choc shop directly across the alley!
We were there in February and found a great hotel (Hotel At Leonard) for about 71Euro/night for 2 people. We found it on booking.com by sorting by price. You don't say when you're going and the price will vary according to the dates. It appears they're not yet taking reservations for next year.
Try the Ai do Mori http://www.hotelaidomori.com/
Hotel Ala http://www.hotelala.it/
or Locanda Fiorita http://www.locandafiorita.com/
We've stayed at all of them (though now we stay at the Fiorita's sister property)
They are all very well located and a decent deal for Venice. Whether they fit YOUR idea of budget is another question!

I've stayed twice at the Hotel Doni, which is a few minutes from San Marco on a very quiet side canal. Last year in October I paid about 90 E for a single room en suite. Hotel is basic and clean, the owners/staff are really helpful, and breakfast is very simple. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again. I would avoid the rooms with a shared bathroom (unless you're pretty flexible). Although my room had a new, sparkling-clean bathroom, the shared ones in the hall looked older. And at least some rooms on the third floor had to come down to use a second-floor bathroom – at least that's what one of the people told me.
Pensione Guerrato. Right in the heart Venice just steps from the Rialto Mercato vapo stop. We just spent three days there after reading about the hotel in Rick's Venice Guide and the hotel was fabulous. Location made our Venice visit memorable.
Some good ideas above to get you started. I hope you'll bring an updated version of Rick's Venice or Italy book on your trip.
