Budget Accommodations in Rome

Hi all,
I'm traveling with a friend this summer on a tight budget... any recommendations about where to stay in Rome? We're hoping to find a room in the 50-70 Euro/night range. Help me out-- is this just wishful thinking?

Lisha, consider staying in a convent/monastery, at least for part of the time. I had a single for 55 euro last summer at a convent near the Colosseum. You can search santasusanna.org for possibilities. It was a basic, very clean room, the nuns were very helpful about what was in the neighborhood. There is usually a curfew of about 11pm or midnight, so if you do want to party late, splurge on a regular hotel for a night or two. Or, check booking.com for accommodations in your price range. I'm sure someone will recommend the Beehive, but I've never stayed there.

indeed convent may be your cheapest option, unless you rent apartment for longer period of time. i found one according to an old rick steves book back in 2003, it's near the colosseum on a quite street. small room, not so good breakfast, but cheap.

Lisha, the convent suggestion is a very good one. Also there are nice hostels in Rome. I stayed at The Beehive in one of the dorms and was quite comfortable. Enjoyed the best full breakfast there. It is very popular however and I suggest contacting them earlier rather than later. Ciao! Linda

Lisha, You'll find the cheapest beds in a Hostel, especially if you're willing to stay in Dorm rooms. One of the Hostels I often use in Rome has Dorm rooms for €35 per person (that's for a four-bed Dorm with ensuite in the room). They also have private rooms (2 beds), but I believe those are in the €90 range. For travel this summer, I'd suggest booking something SOON! I'll be staying there again this fall, and I've already got my room booked. Happy travels!

Lisa,
Try Downtown Accomodation. We paid in that range. It is a 15 minute walk from the train station and 5 minutes from the Forum.

Lisha, this deal from Tavelzoo was mentioned by Clark Howard. Although it is higher (around 89 Euro) than you are looking it does include breakfast for two. Sounds nice and seems to be in a good location. I know nothing about this place but you could check the reviews if interested. It may not fit your dates though as it is for July-August. http://www.travelzoo.com/ca/hotels/international/-115-Rome-4-Star-Hotel-this-Summer-w-Breakfast-40-Off-1233615/

Lisha, take a look at Hotel des Artistes. It is about a seven minute walk from the Termini train station. We stayed here in their hostal section and were satisfied. They have both hotel and hostal sections at very reasonable rates in your price range. We had a huge quad room and our friends stayed in a triple on the same hallway. We did share a bathroom but had no problems with that. When I travel I always look for decent budget accommodations. Take a look at its ratings on Trip Advisor and get more feedback. Not a scenic location but we did feel safe and my friend and I were traveling with kids. I also remember there was a laundromat right around the corner that came in handy.
