Bridge Collapse in Genoa

Travellers by car should avoid Genoa at least for the near future. A major bridge has collapsed that carries the only autostrada from Genoa to Liguria Ponente and southern France (A10). It will no doubt take days for any kind of work-around to be implemented.

EDITED: Some rail traffic has been suspended due to damage. The Genova — Savona — Ventimiglia rail service was reopened by Tuesday evening.

I saw it on CBS News. A huge section fell during a storm, killing at least twelve people.

First a heatwave, then the tanker truck explosion in Bologna, now a bridge collapse during a torrential downpour.

These are difficult times for Northern Italy. That collapsed section, crossed over the rail lines that connect Genoa-to-Milan, not to mention all the freight from the port going inland and to the North.

It's just awful. It's really hard to look at the pictures of the bridge area. Thinking of the rescue workers and people worrying about their family members and friends -- or who already know the worst.

What a dreadful and tragic disaster! I've been following this on various news outlets all day. It's fortunate that many of the industrial buildings under the bridge were not inhabited at the time.
