What attracted you to plan a week in Brescia? If we can start with what attracted you perhaps we will know which way to go.

Hi Nigel, I am traveling for about 25 days two of which will be traveling from US to London. My friend is giving me her 1 week time share and due to the fast approaching date of travel (Dec.13-Jan.6) I don't have many options. There is another week in Viterbo about 1 1/2hrs from Rome or Brescia which is about 45min to Mian. We are also going to Paris so I can easily split the vacation in two Countries (Paris-France, Italy). Originally I had planned Spain since I have a friend who will be there for New Years. So by just staying in Italy longer I could also stay close to Rome.

Ah, that explains it.

I am a huge fan of the Veneto, and really the whole Po valley area and all the way to Milano.

I stopped briefly in Brescia last summer on my way to Venice (by car, my personal car I drove from England) thinking it might be a good place to stop on the way back, and I had points I could use at a particular hotel.

I was totally underwhelmed by Brescia. I didn't get to the central piazza but didn't want to. The hotel was pretty nice inside, as I would have expected for the brand, but the area was awful, all derelict buildings and run down factories - what Detroit used to be like 20 years ago (haven't seen Detroit recently) - and that seemed the same all the way to the Fair.

The centre may be fabulous but I don't know.

Brescia is sort of mid way between Milano and Verona, and is famous, at least here in the UK, for its discount malls. It is also the starting point for the annual Mille Miglia classic car "race" each year - but not in December.

You would be reasonably placed for day trips to Verona, Vicenza, Milano and Pavia. You could also get to Mantova, Modena, and Parma.

It would be too far for me to day trip to Padova, Venezia, Bologna or Firenze.

I hope you have a great trip. and also enjoy Lazio when you get down there.

Please write back with a trip report and tell me how wrong I was about Brescia.
