Brenner Pass Italy/Austria Border Crossing

Hi all; we're staying in Cortina d'Ampezzo September 2020. Is it worth the drive to this Pass; are the Dolomites more spectacular as you go North or should we just tour around the Cortina Area?

Thanks,

Jean

It’s been a few decades since I drove it, but to me it was a mountain pass like so many others in Europe. When I drove it, we were headed from Innsbruck to Turin. I’m not certain I’d drive out of my way just to drive it, especially if there are things to see in the area where you’ll be.

The Cortina area is one of the most spectacular of the Alps - the drive from Cortina to Ortisei through Falzarego, Pordoi and Sella passes or vv. is probably the best in the area. The Brenner Pass is relatively low and not particularly scenic.

From Cortina, take the cable car from Falzarego Pass. The area at the top has some incredible mountains around. Short walks are possible, while for longer hikes you must have appropriate equipment.

Also check out the route of the Great Dolomites Road from Cortina to Bolzano. Drove it last September and the views were outstanding!
