Breakfast in Venice?

We'll be in Venice this June for 3 days. I'm having trouble finding a B&B that serves more than a continental breakfast ie rolls juice coffe etc. Are there restaurants that serve breakfast? Are there places to eat breakfast at the markets? I need protein in the morning!!! Help!!! Thanks

Some B&Bs offer yogurt, cheese, sliced cured meats. You can certainly pick those items up at a market. Most B&Bs will let you store some things in a common area refrigerator. Bacon and eggs? Not happening except at the ritzy hotels.

I think Pensione Guerrato offers salami kind of stuff, if memory serves. The suggestion to pick up some of what you want on your own is perfect. Italians don't do big breakfasts - it's pretty much a pastry and an espresso for them.

I agree with Laurel. When visiting Europe the most you can hope for is some yogurt, fruit or sliced meat/cheese in addition to their usual continental breakfast. I've been to Venice a couple times and have never seen a restaurant that offered 'American egg/bacon' style breakfasts. My suggestion is learn to enjoy your latte and rolls for breakfast (you won't always be offered juice) and then have an omelette for lunch. Omelettes/fritattas are quite often offered at lunch.

Good luck finding an "american" breakfast anywhere in Italy. On our trip we had fried eggs at a B&B in Lucca (along with the standard continental fare) and were quite excited at the prospect. Still, all the "continental" breakfasts we had included plenty of meats and cheeses in addition to pastries, bread, fruit and cereals. It was more than adequate in most places, in others, lesser so. But for those cases, there's always a patisserie

The VAST majority of my Italian breakfasts consisted of prepackaged (like 'Captain's wafers') Melba toast, packaged jelly, and coffee, espresso, and/or cappuccino...Occasionally, an actual soft(ish) roll would make an appearance, and more rarely some fruit and cheese. Very rarely do I recall getting - in Italy - the European Continental breakfast so ubiquitous in Germany, for instance - rolls, jellies/jams/honey, Nutella, meats, cheeses, eggs (at least hard-boiled), cereals, fruit, juices, coffee, tea, milk, etc...(what have I forgotten LOL) I'd buy some cheese to keep in the room...you've certainly picked a good place for cheese! On many occasions I'd have been happy with rolls, juice, coffee, LOL. I just don't understand the cellophane-wrapped Melba toast...never seen it outside of Italian hotel breakfast tables, and I'm not talking hostels, either! Variety is the spice of life...even when it leaves you scratching your head...

HarLyn,
Become a temporary local and have Coffee and a bakery Item like the Italians do. They eat dinner from 9-midnight and are not hungry for a big breakfast. If you want protein in your breakfast go to England, Scotland, or Ireland and stay at a B&B. They have awesome breakfasts and are included with your room. The large market I went to early in the morning by the Rialto bridge did not have any protein ready to eat. Mostly raw seafood and meats, with tons of raw fruits & vege's. Have a Great trip and try to live like most Europeans for a little while, you may enjoy it, if not chalk it up to experience.

Quite often in Italy you will get pound cake and / or other cake for breakfast; no bacon and eggs though

Casa Verardo - admittedly not a B n B, but modestly priced- had several pastries plus yogurt varieties, sliced ham/ salami/ cheese, and flaky croissants worthy of France.
Hotel Berna in Milan - well priced for value- not a Hilton- had an excellent buffet with scrambled eggs and bacon. Had awful roll and merely adequate coffee in Rome at a pension. Grab your protein at a shop for an 'elevensies' picnic.

When in Venice, we rent an apartment and eat breakfast in and then go out for coffee. However, there is a MacDonald's on Strada Nuova, mind you I have never been to a MacDonald's in Venice or elsewhere. Also, on the foot of the Rialto Bridge (market side) are a number of restaurants on the Grand Canal. I have seen people eating breakfast there (including sunnyside eggs, toast......). I can't vouch for the quality or price. Just saying.....

Brek, a cafeteria-style restaurant on Lista di Spagna near the train station has big breakfasts including eggs.

Albergo All'Angelo (4 stars, just behind St. Mark's) offered bacon and scrambled eggs, in addition to typical salamis, pastries, breads, etc. But seriously....haven't you noticed somewhere in RS books the comment "Italians take breakfast about as seriously as flossing". I'm a dental hygienist and I TOTALLY see the absolute truth in that statement every single day in my work and over my 15 years visiting Italy! Continental is truly about as good as it gets for a society that stands at the bar counter to swallow their espresso or capuccino and wolf down a croissant as they make their way to the office. And any time there is yogurt or salami or even a hard-boiled egg you have hit the jackpot. If you want better breakfasts, you have to generally upgrade the hotel category, and even then you still have to search it out. Oh yeahand don't make the mistake of coming down to breakfast near the end of service because I can promise you that they will NOT replenish their supplies JUST for you. Most hotels order/prepare their breakfast supplies based on the number of guests they expect to serve (not necessarily how much those guests may actually eat). For some items, when it is gone, it is gone and if you were the last one to arrive at the breakfast table, too bad for you. You will be hard-pressed to find a cafe that serves more than your hotel will offer. And restaurants that serve an actual breakfast are practically non-existent.
