Boston flights to Rome

Hi, trying to plan a trip to the Amalfi Coast area for my 25th anniversary. Looking to fly into Rome from Boston's Logan. Any recommendations on airlines that won't break the bank? I see non stop flights from Alitalia. Not the best reviews but prices are great and non stop. Is it better to fly from New York? more choice?

I am thinking of doing a couple of days in Rome and then work my way to Amalfi with a home base of Sorrento and then fly out of Rome back to Boston?

Open to suggestions on flights etc...

Thanks,

Take the Alitalia flight non stop to Rome, so much much easier. If you fly to JFK or EWR, you have the cost of a second round trip ticket, unless you would book as one ticket.
We flew Alitalia four times last year within Europe, no problems at all.
For real budget prices, look at Norwegian out of JFK, and perhaps other airports.

If the prices for the direct flight are reasonable, why not book it? Not having to change anywhere is a great advantage, at least I think so.

Note however that Alitalia is not the most finacially stable company and have been close to bankrupcy for a while, but so far they have always managed to raise the money they need to stay alive.

You have two choices:
Alitalia
Norwegian Air Shuttle--but flights are seasonal (whatever that means.) If seasonal is next Summer, you might want to wait much later to purchase your tickets with them as their long term future is somewhat in question.
Any other flight alternatives would require one or more stops, and non-stops are always preferred.

Howdy,

We flew from BOS-FCO in April 2019 on Norwegian for $600 per person, booked in November 2018. Our flights were fine but I've heard horror stories and are reluctant to fly them again. If things go right, you are fine, but we flew carry on only and that is a bit stressful.

Two days ago, we booked flights on BA from BOS to FCO via LHR for $453 per person for April 2020 travel. About 12 hours total travel. I set price alerts on google and skyscanner but actually lucked into the tickets by randomly checking. Carry on only. We actually are going to Naples/Amalfi coast but the flights to Naples are $1000+. So we plan to head straight to Naples from Rome. The same flight was $671 on Friday, $949 yesterday, and $1071 today. I'm get travel insurance for $71.

So figure out when you want to go and keep checking until you get a fare you like. There were some affordable fares ($700) that included a nonstop ALITALIA flight but the dates weren't convenient for us.

Hi Cavallaro,

I really favor British Airways and have flown with them to Italy for a number of years now into Linate and FCO.

They code share with American, Iberia and Aer Lingus Airlines. I found American and Aer Lingus to be somewhat higher in price most of the time.

If you can score one of BA's flash deals, that would be good. I have gotten fares for around $550 RT, BOS to FCO. During late summer, they were going for less than $550 RT.

The meals are not too bad. Last time, I ordered a low sodium pasta meal; came with salad, roll, dessert. It was pretty good. They are generous with the wine -- I do not drink on the plane, but my seatmate was given two different bottles of wine -- he refilled his little glass a few times. (By the way, I was appreciative when he would fill his glass a bit and cap the bottle again in case of spillage)

They will give you the whole (small) can of soft drink. I ask for bottled water. They are generous with that. Oh, and the snacks too if they have them. On the connecting flight to FCO, the attendants have given out protein bars and water. No charge. Maybe it depends on the attendants or the quantity they have in the galley.

I have no complaints about British Airways -- the staff, the professionalism, the helpfulness, the friendliness, and their patience (some unruly travelers on a flight gave the attendants a very hard time.)

I choose a "longer layover" at Heathrow compared to worrying and running down a terminal to a connecting flight...not for me.

I freshen up, have a little something to eat, check my Kindle or whatever, people watch, walk around and browse. Time goes by fast. My last two trips to Rome, I got in around lunchtime, collect my bag, go to my shuttle, get to my hotel within an hour -- coincided with my hotel check-in. I settle in, unpack, organize, shower, dress, go out and walk the neighborhood and hang out until dinner time. lol, maybe TMI, but the above works for me and my sched.

Have fun in Rome.

P.S. Not a good idea to fly out of New York airports unless you are much closer or live in or near NY.

Aer Lingus. Not non stop but the transfer in Dublin is painless and for the return you go through US preclearance in Dublin so arrive back in Boston as if it 's a domestic flight - no long lines at passport control. But if you can find a non stop for the same price I'd consider that. (Although the last time I flew into Boston on an airline other than Aer Lingus I swore I'd never do it again, the lines were so long).
I've also flown Norwegian and love them. Hope they can manage to stay alive.

I got a flight deal alert yesterday and there were direct flights from Boston to Rome on American airlines for certain dates for $250! Good deal!

If Alitalia has a non stop for a good price why not take it?
Alitalia is likely to become in part government owned soon, so no chance of going bankrupt.

When I booked my $453 dollar flight, there was a $261 option departing on April 15, $361 on April 16. But the options for areturn were limited and the outgoing dates were not idea.

American Airlines does not fly non stop Boston to Rome. You would need to transfer flights in Philadelphia.

Which websites are people using to get price alerts when fares go down or when an airline has a Flash Sale? I want to get those alerts!
