We arrive in Rome by train from Orvieto about 1.30 -hotel is about a 15 minute walk, register, then take Metro to Vatican - maybe now 2.30. Question - is this enough time to closing to see the museum, Sistine Chapel and St. Peters'. Or - would you suggest going to the Borghese Gallery and do the Vatican when we have more time on another day. Trying to utilize the time for 2.5 days stay. Day 2 is packed with Colosseum, Forum, Parthaneon, Capitol Hill Museum. Been to St. Peter's before but now traveling with another couple who have never been.
We did a tour of the Vatican from about 1:30-5:30, and that included St. Peters. The sun going down over the Vatican is very pretty.
The Borghese Gallery allows visitors a two hour time slot. Everyone must leave the gallery after their allotted two hours. I went during the last two hours, from 5-7pm--the gallery closes at 7:30pm. This time slot to visit the gallery was so perfect. There weren't many people there at that time. I was able to stand in front of the statues with no one blocking my view--it was awesome. It was an easy gallery to see. It's not huge and overwhelming. You might even be able to do it the Colosseum day. You just need to allow about a 1/2 hour to walk there after getting off the metro at Spagna. Have fun!
I would think the Borghese and Pantheon that first afternoon would make more sense, then dinner and then the Trevi in the evening. You'll need to check for your dates if you can make a 5:00 Borghese reservation, 3:00 would be pushing it since you have to check in about 30 minutes before your entry time. But that's us, the Vatican area always takes a whole day for us. If your friends only want to see the Basilica over in Vatican City then its a draw as to which makes more sense.
