Going to be in Rome next spring. We have been a couple of times before, but this will be first time to visit the Borghese Gardens and museum, tips, ideas, best ways to spend an afternoon. The bikes sound like a fun idea. Best to purchase tickets in advance? Thanks so much! Karen Sortino
You need to purchase tickets in advance for the gardens. Access is tightly controlled and limited to two hours.
I think Frank meant to say that access to the museum is limited to two hours, and numbers are strictly controlled.
Yes, the Borghese Gallery isn't one of those sights where if you don't have a reservation, you'll wait in a long line. It's one where you probably won't get in at all. Only 200 are allowed in per time, and there are four times per day. However, by all accounts this makes it very pleasant - you aren't fighting with thousands of others to get a glimpse of each piece.
You also have to get there early to pick up your ticket and check all your bags; if you don't get there early, they can resell your ticket.
The gardens are free, and are delightful. Lots of paths, folks playing soccer, a café with good coffee...
But you must book ahead for the museum. And don't skip it! It's amazing.
I was at the Borghese six months ago, my second visit in four trips to Rome overall. Definitely book ahead--not just a good idea, you must if you want to see it. You mentioned bikes--after my visit in late October I rented a bike and rode all around the park. It was only around 4 Euro and hour, and a very fun experience. No helmets are offered, so ride carefully.
