Borghese Gallery- Photos now allowed

We were there just 2 weeks ago and expected to have to check our camera/iPhone- but much to our surprise they actually insisted we keep it- said photos are now allowed.

I do not see this change on their website- he indicated it had been in practice for a few months.

What a nice surprise- and we were blown away by the amazing art in that gallery!

Please don't use flash near the marble sculptures and paintings.

While I don’t recall if there were “no flash” signs I would think there must be.

I am not much of a photographer- mostly use my iPhone (no flash) while traveling/touring. I would think most photographers would be aware that flash is not to be used in places like that.

My purpose in posting this was to let others know of the change in policy. Many might leave cameras at hotel when they visit the Borghese, especially if they are not comfortable with checking expensive equipment. I appreciated being able to keep my iPhone in my possession and snap just a few pics.

That said, we were shocked at the number of tourists taking photos in locations that were clearly posted “No Photos”.
The need for some people to take a selfie (usually in a silly pose) in front of holy altars, etc was especially annoying and incredibly disrespectful. Just as bad as those who don't know the meaning of Silence, Please.

But I digress…

You go Christine!

I'm thrilled with the change in photo policy there. It's one of my favorite museums in the world and now I really want to get back.

I am a serious photographer and never use flash in a museum. I am aware of the damage that can be done to paintings but I have never heard that flash/light could damage stone/marble. Have I missed something?

I am not a photographer or an art historian.
My daughter is an art historian- works at NGA, I asked her- she said Google it.

found this-

and this-

I don't really need to know the reasons, but I like "out of an excess of caution".

I think they should start posting "No Selfies" signs.

This new rule changed on July 1rst to allow photos at all state run sites. It can be a good thing or a bad thing. I think it depends on the people taking the pictures.

That is super good news!!! I have been several tmes to the Borghese and had decided to leave it out on my next trip to Rome early next year. I now have to go back to catch a couple of photos that I would love to have, including, perhaps a video walking around one particularly evocotive sculpture.... Thanks for making me spend more money, ChristineH.... LOL
