Borghese Gallery on free Sunday

The one day we're available to go to the Borghese is a first Sunday of the month which is free admission (and no reservations). Will we be disappointed with huge crowds? It will be October 4.

My understanding is that Borghese Gallery only admits a limited number of visitors for each 2-hour period -- reservations REQUIRED. Probably all reservations have been booked for the free day, but sometimes people don't show up and their reservations are given to others who line up for cancellations.

If you can still get reservations, it won't be any worse than any other sold out day as they do limit admissions. I think it is 300 people every two hours.

The Borghese gallery is capacity controlled so even on a free Sunday there won't be any more people inside the gallery than it can legally hold, which is 300 per two hour time slot. You still need to book a free reservation and at this late date I doubt you'll get one. You can try from the official site for the number to call:

Right now there are no slots available to book so they are sold out. These tickets are usually taken within minutes of their release. This just means you'll need to plan another trip to Rome!! ;-)

As the others have stated, reservations are still mandatory at the Borghese on free Sundays as they maintain their schedule of only 350 admitted every two hours regardless.

Unlike reservations for other days, you can't do this online: only by phone. The number is the same as for those reserving with a Roma Pass for other days of the week.

The times given just above by Kathy are Italian time - 6 hours later than EST/EDT, 9 hours later than PST/PDT.

I asked the initial question and thank all those who've responded. I should have added that I corresponded with Borghese Customer Service by email when I noticed no time slots were available for Sunday October 4 and they wrote: "Dear Customer, during the Free days it's not possible to make the reservation."
Some of the responses I've received have indicated that no matter what the day, the Borghese limits the number of people in the gallery so now my question should be to anyone who's attended on a Free Sunday: What time of day is best to visit on a Free Sunday?

The time will not matter in the number of people in the museum. Every time slot will be filled to the max. The best time, is any time you can get a reservation.

bemlaw7, you cannot correspond with them via email or their online site for free Sundays. You MUST contact them by phone. And it does not matter what time your reservation is for as the same maximum number of people are allowed for every 2-hour slot on free days as during regular days: no more.

They fill quickly and as far in advance as allowed for free days.

Nigel, thank you so much for adding that bit of clarification regarding time!
