Hello community!
We are planning a trip to Italy, and Galleria Borghese in Rome is on our list.
However, I see on the official website that "from March 19, due to major renovation work at the museum thanks to PNRR funds, the Pinacoteca located on the second floor will be not accessible to the public. From March 29 the main works will be displayed in Palazzo Barberini."
It says that the major paintings of Raphael, Rubens, and Tiziano will be temporary transferred, but that Bernini's sculptures as well as Caravaggio work will still be showcased on the ground floor. It also says that "From March 29th to June 30th, 2024, Galleria Borghese and Gallerie Nazionali di Arte Antica are joining forces in an unprecedented collaboration.", which may indicate that from July 1st the works will be back at Borghese, but it's unclear (and seems unlikely).
How much and is there anything else that we are going to miss due to the renovation work?
The Palazzo Barberini is a great art gallery in itself, is close to the Borghese and both are relatively small museums. I would go to the Borghese and then the Barberini right after. If you like Bernini sculptures, pop into Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria along the way to see the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa.
Thanks for your reply, Marco. That's a great suggestion - to visit both at the same time, I didn't expect it would be doable! Church of Santa Maria della Vittoria is on our list, too!
Looking at the tickets information, it also seems that children less than 18 y.o. can visit for free (with just a booking charge of 2 euros). Hopefully, I've read that right!
I recently purchased my Borghese Gallery ticket. If you have that ticket, the price for the Palazzo Barberini is less expensive. I think it was about 5€. Look for that ticket option at the bottom of the choices.
Can anyone tell me the site your tickets were booked from? The Borghese Gallery site seems to be screwy, I cannot get to it, as my machine keeps saying that the site has "timed out".
Some of the Caravaggio works were sent to Shanghai. That exhibition ended in early April but I don’t know when they will be on view at the Borghese. Does anyone have any further info on this? Also, one of the Caravaggios seems to be on loan to a museum in Jerusalem. In addition to all this, Santa Maria del Popolo church which has a couple of Caravaggio’s appears to closed until November.
We are going to Rome in June and are disappointed we won’t be seeing these paintings.
Lizcat, could you say where you got the info on Santa Maria del Popolo closing?
We are hoping to visit there too.
Mistimetotravel: It is reported closed on Trip Advisor in a sight review and also in their Rome forum. Also, when I enter Santa Maria del Popolo on the internet, Google lists it as Temporarily Closed. I guess if no one on this thread comments, we could start a new specific topic for it.

Ahh.. that's a shame! Thank you for sharing this info, I hope that the works will be back from Shanghai by June!
