My daughter, age 13, is traveling to Rome and Venice with her grandparents next year. We would like her to gain insights into Italy from the eyes of a young person so she can better understand and appreciate the interactions and culture she will be experiencing. Any suggestions on good books in the genres of historical fiction or non-fiction or just good regional stories would be most welcome.
Thanks!
Cheers,
David
I enjoyed a book by the Italian TV host Alberto Angela available in English: A Day In the Life of Ancient Rome. I think a 13 year old who is a good reader would like it as it's written in a clear storytelling manner with lots of interesting facts. There are some mature subjects presented but I don't think a modern young teen would be disturbed. I think Dad will end up reading it as well.
The Smile by Donna Jo Napoli is a teen fiction novel about the daughter of a Florentine silk merchant who is 13 at the peak of the Renaissance.
This might be a liitle heavy but "Saving Italy" by Edsel is a fascinating read that gives good appreciation of the volume of Italian art and we almost lost it.
