Booking trains out of Chamonix to Italy

Hi all,

My friends and I will be first time visitors to Europe this May. I am trying to book train tickets out of Chamonix to Milan - according to bahn.com there is a set of trains on my day (26 May) departing at 6AM and arriving just after lunch in Milan. However, I cannot for the life of me find a way to actually purchase them either on bahn.com or other sites - I've tried trainline which doesn't seem to allow bookings for May yet.

Is it just that I need to wait closer to the date to book? (I am a little confused because trainline says booking opens 6 months ahead...) or am I not on the correct sites.

Please help!

The train does not go from Germany, to Germany or through Germany therefore you cannot buy tickets from Deutsche Bahn. You need to buy tickets from French railroad or Italian (Trenitalia).

What other sites are you trying? The French site should work if you mean May 2017.

I think perhaps you're a bit early for late-May tickets. Tickets should be available from SNCF (French railroads) and it seems that SBB (Swiss railroads) might work, too. I'm seeing bits and pieces of info on different sites for different dates at this point.

Thanks all - can't believe I didn't think to book all the trains separately on SNCF! Thank you sincerely from a serious beginner...

The quickest way is Chamonix-Vallorcine-Martigny-Brig- Milan. By the current schedule, you would leave at 11:54 and get to Milan at 16:37. There are earlier trains with more connections and take longer. The problem seems to be that the first train, a French TER train is not yet loaded in the schedule after April 2. I don't know the status of this train, if it is only seasonal, they still don't know the schedule, or there is scheduled track work. If that were the case, there is usually a replacement bus put in service. I don't think it is time to panic yet. You might try emailing the SNCF and see if you get an answer.

Why not do something different. If you dont have a lot of luggage, how about taking the funicular up from Chamonix to Aiguille du Midi, then take the 4 mile gondola ride across the top of the mountain to Helbronner Point. Then taking the funiculare down the mountain to the village of Entreves Italy. That's 3 gondola rides, but you'll pass over the Alps into Italy. From there you can catch a bus to Aosta, Italy. Then from there take the train to Milan. It will take some pre-planning, but it is a fantastic experience. Just a suggestion.

Thanks Ray! I've looked into it and am leaning towards your suggestion!
