It’s been a while since we bought Italian train tickets.
We are going to need to be purchasing tickets from Florence to Rome, then Rome to Venice on the fast trains. There are so many levels
Summer Promo Arrows 19.90, Super Economy 27.90, Economy 38.90, Base 50.00 What the heck! This used to be so much easier.
We just need simple seats for the short ride. Do you recommend these two routes be purchased in advance? We know that on the regional trains, i.e., Florence to Siena or Florence to Lucca those you can purchase day of and validated, correct?
If you are set on your dates you can purchase in advance and take advantage of discounts
“Economy” is always fine for us, don’t feel the need for any upgrades so if that Summer Promo works I’d book those
Just be sure you understand all the conditions as far as changes and refunds( likely none for the promos)
I'll just add because this might not have been the case for your last trip that you can use the Trenitalia app to purchase your tickets. They are on the app and do not need validating. You also don't have to stand in line at the station.
If you do this, I recommend taking a screen shot of your tickets so you can also access them from your photos section on your phone.
What is the Intercity train? ie from Orvieto to Rome
It’s a sort of fast train that makes more stops
We’ve taken several
You do have an assigned seat

Economy, SuperEconomy etc. are fares, not seats. You can pay the SuperEconomy fare months before travel and you could end up sitting by some guy who paid the walk-up BASE fare 20 minutes before the departure. Same train, same class, same level of service.
Different fares have different T&C, to learn more click the small gray " i " for information on trenitalia.com . Cheapest usually means "no changes, no refunds"
You can purchase all tickets on the day of travel, Regionale or not, but on high speed and intercity trains you will always pay the BASE fare.
No more and no less. Trenitalia doesn't sell discounted tickets for the trains departing on the same day.
To add to Dario’s comment, the seat classes on Trenitalia Freccia trains (fast trains) are:
Standard
Standard Silence
Premium
Premium Silence
Business
Business Silence
Executive
Silence means what it would mean in a library (no talking loud, including on the phone) or else…
On the Intercity it is only First and Second Class.
