I just read on another site that as of November 1, 2016 it is mandatory to book a visit to access Brunelleschi's dome. The last time we were there in 2015 this was not the case. Can anyone who's been there recently let me know if this is true? Just wondering if the other site is just trying to sell tickets.
Yes, it's true. This is the official website for the Duomo complex:
https://www.museumflorence.com
This is the page for purchasing tickets, and you'll note the text which states:
"Time booking is mandatory to access Brunelleschi's Dome. See dome schedule."

Thanks, Kathy!
The reservation time is a must and free of charge with the Duomo combo ticket.
We had reserved for a 3 pm ascent to the Dome in mid Nov 2016 but I saw that there was no line on the same day at around noon so i requested the guard to let us climb then and was allowed because i had a reservation ( time immaterial)
So reserve a time but don't be shy to ask the guard at the gate to allow you to climb in case u find no line on at a particular time on ur reserved day.
The views are spectacular..
Have a great climb..
Thanks, yogibaba. We've done the climb before a couple of times but are traveling with friends who haven't so we want to be sure they get to see it.
You're welcome! :O)
