Booking in Venice.

My husband and I are traveling to Italy early October. We are trying to book accommodations at a few places ( Rome, sorrento, Venice, Florence) and not sure the best way to approach this. In Venice, we are only staying one night there. Any recommendations on where to stay. Is there an ideal area that is affordable and good location to be able to see a lot quickly. Any recommendations on a hotel ?

In Italy are there any tips on things to watch for when booking a hotel that may not be obvious ie a shared washroom versus one in the room etc.

thank you for your help.

I agree Venice deserves at least 2 nights, that's really only 1 full day. I'd check out Pensione Guerrato. Great location. There is no elevator though.

All of the locations you listed have many recommendations here on the forum
Use the search forum
Here is Florence for past 2 years

Venice-stay near the train station
One night is not enough-give it more if you can
Here is an option
Hotel Abbazia

Use booking.com to search—set your filters for budget, location, amenities ( AC, elevator)

You won’t see many “shared bath” anymore unless your budget is very low

You can trust the reviews there as only those who have actually stayed at the property can submit
You can book there or find the hotel website

I wouldn’t delay too much longer as availability is limited especially in Sorrento

...tips on things to watch for when booking a hotel...

Regardless of where you stay, book directly with the hotel if at all possible. Using third party booking sites can be a problem if you have to alter your plans. We always email the hotel with our request for a booking and usually hear back from them within 24 hours. If all else fails, it doesn't really cost that much to just telephone them.

In Florence, consider the Hotel California - yep, that's really the name. Beautiful place, and you can walk to everything.
