Booking flights in Italy

I am going to book flights from Rome (FCO) to Palermo Sicily (PMO). When booking is it best to go through Expedia, Orbitz, etc. or directly with the foreign airline and does it make any difference?
Thanks!

Always book directly with any airline! We flew four flights on Alitalia last fall , including to Palermo, out of Catania, and easily booked with the airline. If there are any problems, such as the volcano in Iceland a few years ago cancelling flights in and out of Europe, those who book directly are taken care of first.

I have booked that exact route several times directly with Alitalia. Never had a problem.

You don't have to book directly with a foreign airline. Most domestic airlines partner with foreign airlines, so you can book through them also. At one time, Delta partnered with Alitalia. Our last trip, we booked through Delta and were on an Air France plane.

One thing to remember is if you are booking on the Europe site of an airline, you may not have the 24 hour cancellation available to you on a US web site for the same airline.

I always book with an airline directly. Removes extra middle men so if something does go wrong there is less finger pointing and blame shifting.

We always book through the airline directly. Had a bad experience booking through Orbitz once going to S. America. When we flew to Sicily we found better connections going through Munich and Frankfurt. From Washington DC airports, the FCO connections weren’t sufficient to allow for any delays coming from the states. Remember, you will go through passport control at the first airport in the Schengen zone you arrive at. If that is FCO, that’s where you’ll go through passport control, so allow plenty of time.

FYI... we will already be in Italy. We will be getting there by cruise ship then transfer from Civitatecchia to FCO.
