Help. So confused. I see you can book directly with the official site for a very modest fee but not understanding what is included. Do you get a tour with a guide and how large are the groups? You can book a small group tour through other sites like Viator but it's very pricey. Do you get the same type of tour booking directly or is it worth the extra money to go with an outside company? Also do I want to also do the lower levels? Looks like you have to pay extra for they access. Don't know what to do!
Entry tickets are just that-enty tickets. They get you into the colosseum, forum/palatine hill. They don't include any tours or audio guides. These are all purchased separately and for a fee. The underground tour is sold out through most of the end of the year. Yes, it's an additional 11 euros to book online if you can get the slots.

You might also want to check with Walks of Italy. They offer some VIP tours of the Coliseum. We had very little time in Rome and regret that we didn't take the Coliseum and Vatican tours they offer, but we did take their evening stroll of Rome, as well as two tours in Florence. All were excellent and well worth the money. Tickets are included in the price and you skip the lines.
We did the Underground and third tier tour, purchased through the official site. It was much cheaper than a tour company and was very good. It included entry to the Colosseum itself, allowing quick entry, and it was a small 15-person group tour. As already mentioned though they do sell out.
If visiting on your own, try Rick's free audio tour or the same info in his Rome city guide.
