I am looking at airfares to Italy on the Kayak website. I see discounted fares offered through Vayama. Is Vayama legitimate? Is there any disadvantage to booking through Vayama?
The disadvantage to booking any airline tickets through a third party is that if something goes wrong, you have to get the ticket-seller to fix it (example: first flight is delayed and you miss a connection on a different airline).
Yes, Vayama is a legitimate website, but I have never booked through it. Once I know where I want to go and when, I start checking Vayama at least daily to look for price drops for my itinerary, and then book on-line directly with the specific airline when I find an acceptable price. This process can start as early as 11 months before your travel. The advantage, as mentioned above by Zoe, is that if any glitches arise, you are dealing directly with the airline. I have found Vayama to be particularly good for pricing business class tickets.
I've booked through Vayama twice to Europe. No complaints.
I also prefer going directly to the airline, but in those cases the price advantage with Vayama, rather than the airline directly, was too substantial.
Another thumbs up for Vayama. We have booked air to Europe and Asia through them and had no problems. But we also book air through Orbitz and Momondo and have never had any issues arise over the last 15 years of doing our own bookings.
I know that people like to book their airfare directly with the airline, and we HAVE done that on many occasions too.
Our criteria is the price, and if the price is truly not very different, we go to the airline websites.
