banging my head against the wall after trying to decipher the train station and schedules (-: I I wonder how hard it would be to reserve a car to take the 3 of us from Rome down to Sperlonga and pick us up the next morning ?

I tried the captaintrain.com website - there are departures from Roma Termini train station to the Fondi-Sperlonga train station every 1/2 hour to just over an hour, on Trenitalia Regionale trains (6.90 Euros). It's important to put in an early morning time, as well as the date. From the station, it's about another 4-5 miles to Sperlonga, but there is a bus, or perhaps a taxi is an option. (Edited to add that there would be no need to book the trains in advance - just buy your ticket at the station, and go.)
