Booked a Trenitalia train ticket but forgot to assign a seat - Big deal?

Hi all,

So I just booked online a cheap economy ticket in 2nd class between Naples and Rome,, in advance of my upcoming trip in Italy.

After booking it, I realized I forgot to assign myself a seat. I'm not sure how to go back online and assign a seat.

Is this a big deal?

Do I just find out which seat I will get, the day of? How do I find out when I'm at the train station?

that particular ticket does not require a seat selection it is first come first serve
or it randomly selected the seat for you so look closely on the PDF e-ticket they sent you

it would say carriage or corozza and place or posto
meaning car and seat

If it was the Frecciarosa you should have a seat

The ticket is for a Regionale train.

The email says "Seat: Seats (only 2 classe)

In the pdf says "Offer/service: Ordinaria - 2 classe"

Did you mean to get a Regionale which is ever so much slower than the high speed Frecciarossa trains? Most people go the fast way, especially if their vacation time is tight....

If you stick with the Regionale, no seats are reserved - it isn't possible. Like a city bus, if you see a seat you can use it. If the seats are full you can stand.

Lesson for the next time: have a look at the travelling time, and the type of train. Regionale trains are slower, don't need reservation and have a fixed price. On this trip the Regionale train takes some 1,5 hrs longer than the Frecciarossa. Use it for some reading or people watching.

We took the slower regional train between Rome and Naples in mid April. It was most crowded for about 20 minutes, then a lot of people got off and there were empty seats until Naples. The hardest part is that the bin/track for the train wasn't posted until about 5 minutes before the train left. Everyone stood by the big digital schedule board and as soon as the bin/track was posted ran to the platform. We took the same train years ago and actually had to sit on our luggage fir mist of the trip, but we met some very interesting locals. Are you staying in Naples? If so, know that the Metro at the Girabaldi station is very convenient.

rabbithairboy, you don't need to wait for the track to be posted and run around the station.

Can you tell us the train number and the hour of departure?

So I have two trains, one from Pompeii to Naples, then Naples to Rome.

What does it mean when the itinerary pdf says:.
Pick up procedure: Biglietto Elettronico regionale?

Train:Regionale 3382 date 25/04/2017
Departure: Pompei (time: 07:44); Arrival: Napoli Centrale (time: 08:22)
Seat : Seats (only 2° Classe) Service : 2° Classe

Train:Regionale 12276 date 25/04/2017
Departure: Napoli Centrale (time: 15:37); Arrival: Roma Termini (time: 18:24)
Seat : Seats (only 2° Classe) Service : 2° Classe

The train that you booked from Naples to Rome is a milk run...I would try to change it to a 1.5 hr ride...if possible.

That e-tickets do not need to be picked up (and time stamped), being electronic tickets.

I'm looking for your intended tracks...

... ok Regionale #3382 usually leaves, from platform nr 2. https://goo.gl/tLLI78 .
Regionale #22276 usually leaves from platform 12. https://goo.gl/30BhhJ . If I counted correctly, it makes 13 stops before calling at Rome. Don't wait the last second to get your stuff and approach the door.

As I wrote, those are the intended tracks that, like airport gates, may and often do change. The trick is waiting in front of the "Partenze/Departures" monitor closest to the intended track. In Naples it's quite easy because Centrale is an head station where you don't have to use underpasses.
I'm sure you know that:

  • 4/25 is a national holiday and all trains may be crowded
  • there are tons of earlier high speed trains going to Rome, run by trenitalia.com or italotreno.it (aka the private competitor with great sales).

Hi,

Thanks for the tips on boarding.

Yeah i went for the slower train as it was about half the cost of the fast one.
