Book Florence/Rome Tix in Advance?

My wife and I are traveling to Sorrento, Tuscany (Chianti Region) and Rome September 27-October 6. I plan to use TrenItalia or similar to travel by train from Naples to Florence and from Florence to Rome (renting a car in Tuscany). As an unsophistacated Italy traveler, is it better to book the train tickets in advance from the U.S. or purchase the tickets on the fly in each city (I know in advance which days I will travel, though I an not as certain of the actual time on a given day)? Thanks in advance. Steve

If you know the date and can stick to a time you can get some real bargains by buying in advance. If not, there is no problem buying at the station you just won't get the discounts. Donna

If you book early enough on the high speed trains you can get big discounts. But on the regionale trains just buy them on the station. I bought a ticket from Venice to Florence in June for my September trip for 19 euro. Today same train is 57 euro.

Thanks Donna and Robert. Your info is helpful. If I can find a deal, I will book from home and try to keep to the schedule. Thx

If you are going directly from Sorrento to Florence, be sure to allow enough time to get to Naples. The Circumvesuviani schedule changes and the trains are often a few minutes late.
