Bolzano vs Merano

After hiking in the Dolomites, i thought about sending a few nights in one of these cities. Have just done a quick look, but Merano seems to catch my eye more then Bolanzo. They look close to each other, maybe stay in one and do a daytrip to the other one? Would three nights be enough time to cover both? Top Must See / Do's?

We went by train through Bolzano to get to Merano where we stayed for 3 nights. We loved the vineyard/orchard trails in the hills surrounding the city, we loved the possibility of excellent Italian and Austrian dishes, we loved the spa town feel. Friends enjoyed biking along the river from further up in the mountains down to Merano. I think 3 nights would be about right to enjoy Merano and take a little side trip to Bolzano, a larger city many people also enjoy. For me, I'd prefer to stay in Merano.

Merano has some nice old world looking, elegant hotels in the center as well as agriturismos in the surrounding hills.

Both are quite nice during a previous trip to Italy. We want to spend more time in Merano and will. One vote Merano.

They are about 30 minutes from each other by car. Bolzano has the fascinating "Ice Man" exhibit at the Museum of Archaeology. Well worth seeing. Starting just to the west of Merano is the Vinschgau (valley) with plenty of medieval castles... Tirolo, Juval, Kastelbell, Churburg, just to name a few. Gorgeous area. Alpine scenery, orchards, castles, etc. all the being said, I'd base in Merano.

I really enjoyed spending four nights in Merano a couple of years ago. One of the highlights was walking one of the trails, through orchards and vineyards, to the Gardens at Trautmansdorf Castle, exploring the Gardens for several hours, then walking back. It was also really delightful to walk the Promenades along the Passer River.
