We are planning to drive from Bolzano to Varenna via Ponte di Legno, Aprica and Sondrio from May 9 - 12, and would appreciate any advice on road conditions, weather, interesting places to stop overnight, etc.

Nice itinerary.
If I were you, I'd leave Bolzano early in the morning and drive all the way to Passo del Tonale. You can ride a couple of gondolas over there to reach Presena and Adamello glaciers (some 10000 ft of evelation). Stop for the night down the valley at Ponte di Legno. On the next day resume your trip driving down to Edolo, Up to Aprica and down again to Valtellina valley foor. Stop over at Teglio for a dish of pizzoccheri (local pasta dish, sooo good) and resume your trip in the afternoon to Varenna.
