We are traveling from Bolzano (Dolomites) to Northern Lake Garda. Can we get to Riva by train or only Rovereto by train? If Rovereto, what transportation should we take to get to the lake? Our goal is to take a ferry to a few towns on Lake Garda over 2.5 days. The last night we will spend on the south side of Lake Garda to be able to catch a train to end in Varenna. Thanks for your help!
The trenitalia website doesn't recognize Riva del Garda as a destination, so I assume there is no rail service to that town. Trentino Transporti runs buses from the Rovereto train station to Riva. Here's the schedule: https://www.trentinotrasporti.it/pdforari/extraurbani/linee/OrariDiDirettrice-E21I-332A.PDF Buses are reasonably frequent and take less than 50 minutes. Do check the footnotes to the schedule; some buses don't run on Sundays or run only on Sundays, etc. "Feriali" are weekdays, which I believe included Saturdays in this case. "Festivi" are Sundays (and I guess also some holidays).
The train serves Peschiera del Garda and Desanzano a bit to the west—-both are at the south end because that is where the train runs. You can get there on the train from Verona.
If you haven't tried it, the rome2rio.com website is a great resource for showing you what the the transportation options are between any two cities, anywhere. It looks like best option is train to Rovereto, then bus to Riva del Garda. Lake Garda was a great area to see. We stayed in Malcesina a few years ago and enjoyed it as a stop between Venice and Bolzano. But we didn't get to go on ferries that day we hoped because of heavy fog! That was in April.
Train Bolzano-Rovereto. Bus Rovereto to Riva del Garda. Ferry Riva-Sirmoni. Ferry Sirmoni- Malcesine Ferry to Peschiera del Garda where you can catch a train to Varenna.
The lake Garda site will give you the ferry timetables. You should be able to find them at the ferry docks.
