Staying two nights in Bolzano. Possibly taking train from Milan. Not sure about renting a car. Looking to hike, enjoy scenery, restaurants. Thoughts or comments on Bolzano. Thanks.

Take the bus from Bolzano to Ortisei and hang out there. It is early, but the Alpe di Siusi gondola is scheduled to open May 21. The Resciesa cable railway will open May 15. That will give plenty of hiking routes for 2 days.

Absolutely agree with Sam. The #170 bus goes hourly from the Bolzano station to Ortisei Piazza S. Antonio. Much more charming than Bolzano and actually in the mountains.

When in Bolzano be sure to visit Otzi -- "The Ice Man". Google it and see what you think.
