Bolsena or Viterbo?

Hi all, my husband and I will be renting a car at FCO and driving up to Montepulciano in June. We’d like to spend a few hours somewhere along the way, and I was thinking Bolsena or Viterbo. We’ve been to Orvieto already. For context, we are art and history people. What do y’all think? I’m also open to other suggestions if you think so something better :) Thanks!

Viterbo is on my list, it may have more to see/do than Bolsena, but that might not matter for a short stop.
Pitligliano is nice too!

I've had the same places on my list! I haven't been to Viterbo, but we went through Bolsena on the one trip we drove in Italy and I remember thinking "I'd like to come back here." Not sure there's much art or history there.

The historic center of Viterbo is walled. At the very least you'd need to research your parking options really carefully. Bolsena might be better for a quick stop. Or if you like gardens, the Villa Lante is just a few miles (maybe 3?) from Viterbo. Entry fee there, though.
