Appreciate your honest insight and help. Heading to the Emilia Romagna 2023 F1 race in Imola end of May but adding on an additional week for exploring northern Italy. Total 14 days. Like to end up in Geneva for couple days to sight see and visit my cousin and then fly back to the states from there. Doable or crazy?
It's doable, if you don't mind an almost 7 hour journey on a train (with at least one change in Milan, depending on the departure city).

Not sure if the online timetable is available all the way through May (haven't tried), but you can check a date in the next few days or weeks to see what is available.
I think Venice might have non stop flights to Geneva (with EasyJet), if you decide to include Venice in your Northern Italian list of places to visit.
You can fly non-stop to GVA from Venice or Rome.
Actually thinking of taking train versus flying to see the countryside etc. I guess my question to you is if we fly into Bologna (or is Florence better?) to get started in Imola. What are some key things to see in that region (Like to go to Modena and Marenella-one day or two days you think?) My gut wants to take me over to Cinque Terra because my husband never see that coast line or Italy or is it better to focus more on the eastern coastline (neither of us have explored this region of Italy) ;-) Then take train to Geneva. Looks like best train /shortest is from Milan. Trying to work this out in my head and getting frustrated--so greatly appreciate your experience and knowledge of the region ;-) Thank you!
