We are planning a trip to Bologna and then on to the LeMarche region in May. We will have a car for that part of the trip. Any suggestions on routes to take?
Urbino above all (prejudiced)! San Marino if you want to pick up another country on your way. If you have more time, then Macerata and Ascoli Piceno. I held off answering hoping that Roberto would chime in, but I'm quoting from a previous post of his: "The best portion of the Marche coast, IMO, is the Riviera del Conero, near the Mount Conero Park, just south of Ancona. Numana and Portonovo are both nice little towns and the sea spectacular." Charlene, who also posts on this site, loves Senigallia. Someone else recommended Camerino. Finally, someone from London recommended Il Sentiero agriturismo, which is about 15 miles straight north of Ascoli Piceno, "a straightforward 20-minute drive inland from the Adriatic motorway," she said. The agriturismo is about 1 km from Montalto delle Marche. It's run by Antonella and Guido. I've saved all the above information for several years, hoping for a return to that region. I think it's as beautiful as Tuscany and much less touristed. Happy travels!
EDIT: If you have time and haven't previously visited Ferrara and Ravenna, I recommend those two stops as well.
