Bologna then Switzerland

We will be in Bologna in early October then would like to travel for an additional week north to the lakes region and into Switzerland to see something of the Alps. Can anyone suggest a one week or so itinerary? Our preference is train; we are all around 70 and in good physical health but not up for strenuous hikes -- perhaps seeing the Alps from a train rather than hiking. Also, we are flying into Milan. Do we depart from Milan, or Zurich or Geneva? Thanks for suggestions.

When I travel to Italy I fly into Zurich on Delta and take the train down into Italy (great views from the train window). usually go to Bologna for the first night or two. It's about 4-5 hours from Zurich. I spend time on Lake Maggiorie on the way back to Zurich....there is a day train you can take and taking the boats around the lake is wonderful, as well. Stresa is a good base. I have also based out of Cannobio.
