Be sure to do a keyword search for Bologna in the upper right corner of this page. That way you can get input from those who have posted earlier but won't see your request. As for specifics, I recommend taking the tourist bus on the loop around the city to get your bearings. It's one of those hop-on-hop-off things. It starts its route in Piazza Maggiore.

I was blown away by the lifesize terra cotta figures at Santa Maria Della Vita church. They're almost surreal, despite being 500 years old.

I'll try to dig up the name of the wonderful restaurant where we ate.

Found it in my notes/journal. Trattoria "dal Biassanot " - Via Piella 16/a - 40121 Bologna.

Here's their website:

In case you don't know Italian, click on the "Dove siamo" button to see where they are. Outstanding genuine Bolognese food. I had the wild boar and it was to die for. My partner had "stinco di maiale con funghi" - pork on a spit with mushrooms. Amazing. It's where the locals eat. But it wasn't cheap. We rang up a 95 euro tab for the two of us. But we had several courses and dessert and wine. When you're in Bologna, you want to eat well.

Rick doesn't describe Bologna in detail. So here's a link to a prior discussion here of Bologna: click hereand a link to the internet: http://goeurope.about.com/od/bologna/ss/bologna_pics.htm; And enter Bologna in the search box, upper right, and you'll get many hits linking you to prior discussions.
Restaurant: Da Bertino is an old-fashioned traditional trattoria with a loyal local following, which I believe has been enjoyed recently by Ron, the Helpline's "Rome correspondent," And try not to miss:the Maesta by Cimabue in Santa Maria dei Servithe Torre PendentiBasilica di Santo StefanoBriefly on Bologna: The two adjoining squares, Piazza Maggiore and Piazza del Nettuno, together with Piazza di Porta Ravegnana form the heart of this "red" city (color of its masonry). Albergo San Vitale was an old convent and is a good value for the money. There is so much else to see in this young university city that it would take a couple of pages to even summarize, you probably need a good book such as Michelin Italy.
