I am planning a trip to Italy in June and have one day between our stays in Florence and Venice. Had planned on staying the night in Bologna, but now am wondering if Padova might be a better choice? Anyone spent time in both and have a strong feeling about one over the other? Not necessarily looking for great "sights" as we will get plenty of that in Rome, Florence and Venice, but would like the opportunity to see a little bit of Italy that is not so squarely on the tourist path....Thanks in advance!

I assume that you are taking the high-speed train from Florence to Venice S.L. It only stops at Bologna, Padova and Venice-Mestre. Padova is a lot closer and you have the benefit that most of your journey is complete. But I would suggest Bologna. Many don't know that Bologna is one of the gastronomical capitols of Italy. Some great food there and the train station is centrally located.
Note that there is no hop off/hop on priveleges on your ticket so you will have book separate tickets from Florence to Bologna and from Bologna to Venice S.L. (or from Padova if that is your choice).
