In between Rome in late October and Venice on November 4 we're thinking of making a 5 to 6 day stop in Bologna, serving as home base to visit several nearby areas. If anyone has suggestions for a charming place to stay in central Bologna could you please share? We'll be staying in hotels in Rome and Venice so would prefer an apartment rental through AirBnB or VRBO. TIA.
We visited Bologna and it was good, but nothing like Florence or Venice.
Loved Ravenna.
We LOVED Bologna. Great base to explore the area and a charming and vibrant city center. We stayed at an Airbnb between the train station and city center and were super happy (this was mid-June). Quiet area but 10-15 minute walk to train or downtown. And around the corner from a delicious bakery and gelato.

Bologna nel Cuore B&B is just what you are looking for. The owner has both rooms and apartments in a lovely old building in the center.
We loved Bologna, too. Our apartment for four nights in December was one of our favorites in Italy: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/411523?guests=1&adults=1&s=67&unique_share_id=96f5b577-c113-446f-8132-3a17b4d9c15b
Quiet, well-equipped, nice living room with couches, and a 14 minute walk to Piazza Maggiore and just a little long of a walk to the train station but less than half an hour. And right across the very un-busy street from the apartment was a restaurant we enjoyed a lot and were greeted like old friends the second time we went there: Osteria Broccaindosso.
Thank you all!
Bologna nel Cuore was fantastic, thank you Pony Girl!
