Bologna, Nice...and where to dip a toe into Switzerland - late May

Hi there! We are trying to figure out how to spend time in both Bologna and Nice, while also dipping our toes into Switzerland. In addition to travel days, we have 10 days on the ground, but can POSSIBLY stretch to 11. I had it all worked out, until flying out of Nice or Marseille are not options. This was my original plan:
Land in Zurich early morning, spend 1 night there and 2 nights in Lucerne
Train from Lucerne to Bologna 4.25 hours and spend 4 nights there
Then Bologna to Nice - 6.5 hours for the last 3 nights and fly home
(or could do 3 in Bologna, 4 in Nice)

Now that we can't fly out of Nice, we would either have to train to Milan to fly home, which means adding a night there, or reverse the order of the trip, flying into Milan and out of Zurich but that would require a REALLY long train ride from Nice to Lucerne.
(Also The Last Supper tickets are already sold out or an overnight in Milan would be more enticing).

I have researched for so long, and tried so many scenarios that I can't think straight! I'm hoping someone here with more experience and fresh eyes can offer a better solution. We are not tied to Lucerne or Zurich. My husband's ancestors are from Switzerland and we really would just like to see the Alps and spend a little time. We planned on a couple of churches, museums and boat ride in Zurich and then we were going to include Mt Pilatus in our time while in Lucerne.

Our fav spots so far have been Barcelona, Florence, Provence and Rome. I love Paris especially for the art, as I am an impressionist painter. We love good food. We both also enjoy coastal towns (enjoyed Amalfi Coast and Cinque Terre). All of this to say, just a couple of nights in Switzerland with beautiful scenery and some good food would be great!

Thank you so much!

P.S. My other idea was to do Lyon instead of Bologna which could help with train distance, but I really like the idea of Bologna and side trip to Modena and possibly Ravenna.

The one thing that is "not like the others" is Nice. I assume there is a compelling reason to go there but you don't mention it. You might check flights from Geneva too to broaden your search, particularly if you want to consider Lyon instead of Bologna, and then do the western Alps south of Lake Geneva (Zermatt?).

Hi NickB! I did forget to share that! I thought the towns along the coast - Eze, Menton, Villefranche-sur-mer looked very picturesque and a bit romantic (it's our 25th wedding anniversary) and I thought I would enjoy the Renoir, Matisse and Chagall Museums. When you say Nice is not like the rest - is there no comparison of these towns to Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast?

I did check Geneva after I made this post, but flights were long with multiple connections. I also forgot to mention we are using Delta Miles so the offering for upgraded seats is driving the train. My husband is 6'4" so main cabin for these long flights just doesn't cut it. Ye,s we should have started planning months ago...but we are where we are!!

Would Mont Bre and/or Lugano be good choices? Zermatt does look beautiful. It looks like no matter what we do we're going to have to fly in and out of either Milan/Zurich. The multi-city is actually less but I'll do what makes the most sense...except for Nice because it's just too much.

Do you have an opinion of Lyon versus Bologna. I also thought Chamonix looked beautiful but it's definitely not as well connected. And that doesn't solve the Switzerland piece.

Thank you so much!

I was speaking of Nice as geographically distant, not trying to compare the sights. If Milan is a go then for Switzerland I would suggest Lugano and doing the old slow Gotthard Pass train route up and over the Alps to the Lake of Lucerne. Then you can catch the fast train back through the Gotthard tunnel before heading back to Milan. Have fun!

Thank you for your help!! I think I finally have this worked out - how does this sound:

Arrive Zurich Friday at 8am - hop train immediately and head to Lucerne for one night
Sat - Mon - stay in Lugarno (or could stay in Varenna and day trip to Lugarno) - thoughts for which?
Mon-Fri - Nice and surrounding towns
Fri-Tues - Bologna

Our flight out of Milan is not until 11:21 am - I see there is a train from Bologna direct to the airport In Milan - would you feel safe to do this? This would eliminate a night in Milan.

Thanks again!! I'm feeling like it's finally coming together! I've tried to talk myself out of Cote D'Azur but I just can't do it!!!

May I suggest the Gotthard Panorama Express Boat -Train excursion from. Lucerne to Lugano.

and move on as desired from there to Varenna or stay in Lugano. Your choice based on your research of what else to see.

Thank you so much for your help and suggestion of the Gotthard - we are looking forward to it! Our flights are booked! I don't know what changed, but when I went back in I was able to get a flight out of Nice. So we will now start our trip in Switzerland, head to Italy, and then one 7 hour train to Nice for our last four nights! We may stay in Florence instead of Bologna and still do a day trip to Verona and Modena or Bologna!

Thanks again!
