Bologna - Lake Como areas

We are beginning to plan a trip for mid April-early May 2027 and thinking of Bologna (we've never been), Lake Como, where we visited Varenna a couple of years ago and then flying from Milan to Barcelona. Would love some suggestions about Bologna and Lake Como destinations other than Varenna to recommend. We loved it, but want to explore some other towns with ferry access. We like dining, scenic views, but not heavy crowds. Any suggestions for small Inns or rentals are appreciated. We're thinking of staying 2 weeks in the Lakes area.

Lots of options for the lake region in 2 weeks:

Lake Como: Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio, Bellano
Lake Maggiore: Stresa (base), then visit Borromean islands, Lake Orta and Orta San Giulio, Cannobio, Locarno (CH), Cento Valley scenic railroad, etc.
Lake Garda: Malcesine, Riva, Limone, Garda, etc. Valpolicella wine region also there. Verona just a short distance away.
Lake Iseo: Lovere, Monte Isola, Pisogne, Iseo, Sarnico,

If interested also in Bologna, besides Bologna itself, which is large enough to keep you busy for at least a day or two, you can also use it as a base for numerous day trips: Ravenna, Ferrara, Modena, Parma, among others.

Stresa on Lake Maggiore makes a good base as the town is well located with good services. Isola Bella. one of the Borromeo islands, is just offshore and is a fantastic attraction. Stresa has numerous ferry connections to other towns on the lake. You can also travel to Malpensa by train in a little over an hour with one change, making an easy arrival or departure point.
