Bologna in January

Planning a trip to Italy in January and thinking about staying a couple days in Bologna, since I've read many reviews of the wonderful food there. Will stores, shops, etc be open in January? I know it's a University town, but haven't been able to find much on traveling there in the winter. Thanks for any suggestions!

Yes, everything will be open in January, even most of the gelato shops. Bologna is great any time of the year.

Take a look at this helpful pdf guide. It has a number of itineraries to help your viisit. http://www.emiliaromagnaturismo.it/en/publications/donwloads/GuidaBologna.pdf/view?searchterm=guides We found Bologna to be a busy and friendly city. Maybe would not fit your idea of a University town ie a place full of students that is quiet in break times. It is also a major exhibition/trade fair centre so has lots of visitors from all over Italy and the world. You will notice hotel/b&b prices shoot up (can double or more) and decent accom can be hard to find when a fair is in town so, if you can, avoid those times. The link shows the latest calendar of events. http://www.bolognafiere.it/en/calendario/ We liked it so much that I am planning our third trip in three years!
