Bologna for a week

We've just arrived in Bologna with a car. Based in Best Western Tower Hotel on the outskirts. We're here for a week and will visit Lucca, Prato and Firenze on day trips. Any suggestions for a couple of days Bologna itinerary (incl restaurants) and other close towns/sites?

Restaurant: Osteria La Traviata, on Via Urbana, located south-central area inside the city walls.

Gelato: Cremeria d’Azeglio and/or Sorbetteria Castiglione.

Ravenna, northeast of Bologna, is famous for Byzantine mosaics in churches. Parma, north of Bologna, is famous for Parma ham and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese.

Back in Bologna, you can drive up to the Santuario della Beata Vergine du San Luca (Sanctuary of the Madonna of San Luca - St. Luke), or better yet hike up the covered portico the whole way. Start at the Porta Saragossa at the southwest corner of the city wall.

Take the Italian days food tour - visit the factories and producers of parmigiano reggiano cheese, balsamic vinegar and prosciutto de Modena. And end it with lunch. You learn so much, have a great day, and of course the food!

Sfoglia Rina is a wonderful restaurant. They do not do reservations and the line can be long but so worth it. The restaurant opens at 11:30 for lunch.

Pizza was in Mercato Delle Erbe at a lace Calle Mozzabella. The best pizza that I had was at this place. So delicious.

I was in Bologna for a month and ate at some great places and these were my top two. Enjoy!

The Italian Days food tour is fantastic. We got balsamic vinegar and Saba you won’t find elsewhere. They’ll be doing the driving, though, in a Mercedes Benz van.
